Kings County was founded in 17th-century as the Dutch-founded community of Breuckelen on Long Island’s East River shore. It grew into a large city in the 19th Century and was consolidated with New York City in 1898.
Brooklyn is governed by the New York City Charter, which provides for a strong mayor-council system since 1898 when it was consolidated with New York City.
New York City’s central government is responsible to provide public education, correctional facilities, libraries, public safety and welfare services for Kings County.
Kings County is home of many
parks and attractions, including Prospect Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Coney Island. Floyd Bennett Field, the original municipal airport in New York City, which was long closed, is now part the National Park System. Green-Wood Cemetery is one of the most important cemeteries in America and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Brooklyn is home to strong international immigration, which creates employment in retailing, construction and services.
Brooklyn has seen a steady increase in financial back-office operations in Manhattan over the past few years. This is in addition to the rapid growth in a high-tech, entertainment and business community in
DUMBO. There has also been strong growth in support services like accounting, personal supply agencies and computer service firms. Brooklyn Navy Yard was established in 1801, and at its peak, it employed over 70,000 people. It was the largest employer in the borough. Industrial design firms, food processing companies, artisans, as well as the film and TV production industry are some of the later tenants. The Yard is home to approximately 230 private-sector companies that provide 4,000 jobs. Services and construction are the fastest-growing sectors. Brooklyn’s most prominent employers are small businesses.

Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, Medgar Evers College (CUNY), CUNY’s New York City College of Technology(City Tech), SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Kingsborough Community College are all public colleges. Brooklyn Law School, Long Island University and Pratt Institute are some of the private colleges in Brooklyn.
